Assessment of Arsenic and other Contaminants in Surface and Groundwaters of Almopia Municipality, Greece_ Regional Unit of Pella

ACRONYM: WASP

MD_Integration Act | Executive Authority of the Partnership Agreement, Environmental Sector

European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism 2014-2021

( EEA and Norway Grants 2014-2021)

In the area of Aridaia of the Municipality of Almopia Increased arsenic concentrations were detected (usually at concentrations from 11 to 17 μg/L but also up to 26 μg/L in some cases) exceeding the upper acceptable legal limits on human consumption (10 μg/L).

The confirmed presence of arsenic in the groundwater bodies of the region of the Regional Unit of Central Macedonia makes it imperative to investigate the source of arsenic.

The aim of the project is to investigate the presence of arsenic and other potentially toxic elements or other pollutant loads (nitrates, etc.), of anthropogenic and geogenic origin, which could affect the quality characteristics of groundwater in the area.

  1. Review and assessment of the current situation
  2. Design and conduct of a sampling/analysis program in groundwater and surface water
  3. Field measurements
  4. Application of tracers
  5. Exploratory pumping at various depths in an existing borehole
